First Activation of Essington Community DefibrillatorOn 16/09/14 Safeaid Services received a call from West Midlands Ambulance Service informing us that the AED unit based at Essington Community Centre had been activated.
For Patient confidentiality we can not release exact details but at approximately 2000hrs WMAS informed a local resident to the location of the "Public Access Defibrillator". The AED was removed from the cabinet on the wall of the community Centre and taken to a residential property.
Although the unit was not used on the patient it was in-situ prior to the arrival of ambulance crews. This proves the importance of having AED units available within the community.
Thankfully the patient was not in Cardiac Arrest but if they were the unit would have potentially administered the first shock prior to professional attendance and would have massively increased the casualties chance of survival. Safeaid Services collected the AED back from the responding Paramedic Officer and put the unit back available for public use. WMAS then updated their system showing the unit ready again for redeployment.
We are still trying to raise funds for additional AED units within the community. Donations can be sent direct to Safeaid Services or to the Essington Parish Community Defibrillator scheme C/O Essington Parish Council.
