QA Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF)
This qualification is based on the Ofsted guidelines for people who work with, or look after, children to enable them to have a basic knowledge of how to deal with emergency first aid situations.
Aim of Qualification
The aim of the qualification is to enable learners to attain the knowledge and competencies needed to deal with a range of first aid situations which can arise when working with or looking after children. Learners should be able to demonstrate the practical administration of safe, prompt, effective first aid in emergency situations with an understanding of the role of the paediatric first aider.
Structure of the Qualification
This qualification contains 2 mandatory units with a Total Qualification Time (TQT) of 16 hours.
Learners must complete all assessments successfully within the registration period to achieve the qualification. The maximum period to achieve this qualification, including any referrals is 6 weeks.
TQT is the total number of hours required for a Learner to achieve this qualification. It has 2 elements:
Guided Learning Hours (GLH) is the time a Learner is being taught and assessed under the immediate guidance of a Trainer/Assessor, which for this qualification is 12 GLH (minimum), and
The number of hours a Learner will reasonably be likely to spend in preparation and study, including assessment, as directed by, but not under the immediate guidance or supervision of a Trainer, e.g. pre- course reading, which for this qualification is 4 hours
This qualification contains 2 mandatory units with a total value of 2 credits.
The qualification is designed for people who have a specific responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities, to provide First Aid to children (including babies) when dealing with an emergency situation.
There are no formal entry requirements but in order to benefit from the learning, learners should possess communication skills sufficient to allow them to address the assessment requirements of the qualification.
The QA Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) is only valid for a period of 3 years, within which time the learner will need to re-take the course and the assessment in order to remain qualified. This is in line with the guidance from Ofsted.
It is also recommended that learners undertake an annual refresher on the main points of First Aid, however, this is not mandatory and does not form part of a QCF unit or qualification.
Relationship with Other Related Qualifications
The QA Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) contains units that appear in a number of qualifications offered by other Awarding Organisations. Therefore the units achieved in this qualification can be transferred to these qualifications.
The QA Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) can be used towards other qualifications at the same and higher level, plus aid career progression in a relevant profession.
