Defibrillators for The Workplace
Placing an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in your workplace is one of the most proactive and powerful steps you can take to protect the lives of your employees, customers, and visitors. For every minute that passes without CPR and defibrillation, a person’s chance of survival decreases.
There is a common misconception that only medical professionals can operate a defibrillator. This is untrue! Even an untrained individual can use a defibrillator, but calling emergency services first is advised so they can assist you in using it and have an ambulance on the way.
Having a defibrillator in the workplace may be a necessity to meet compliance, but it can also be a choice to improve the safety of your colleagues. Choosing to have one installed gives people peace of mind while also showing that you care about their well-being.
If you work in a high-risk environment, then defibrillators are often mandatory, as well as bleed kits to ensure the highest safety measures possible.
Looking After Your Defibrillator
Regularly checking your defibrillator is important so that it can be ready to use in the case of an emergency without any issues. Significantly, the pads are within date, and the battery is kept in good condition. Physical inspection of your defibrillator (especially outdoor defibs in cabinets) is required regularly to spot any differences. A light or a beep may be signalled to let you know if anything is wrong. Also, double-check that the other items are there and stored correctly. Replace any out-of-date sticky pads. Avoid turning the defibrillator on to save the battery.
How Often Should a Defibrillator Be Checked?
Always refer to the user manual that comes with your defibrillator, but it is advised that weekly or monthly checks be performed to make sure it’s in top condition.
How to Use a Defibrillator
Switch On and Prepare the Person: Press the green ‘ON’ button and listen carefully to the voice instructions. Immediately remove clothing from the person’s chest and waist area. Use the scissors in the pack if needed to cut clothes, including bras. Do not let embarrassment stop you. Speed is essential.
Attach the Pads: Peel the sticky pads and attach them firmly to the person’s bare, dry chest, following the clear diagrams shown on the pads or the machine.
Analyse the Heart Rhythm: Stop CPR and ensure NO ONE is touching the person. The machine will now analyse their heart rhythm.
Deliver the Shock (If Instructed): If a shock is needed, the machine will alert you. Shout “Stand clear!” and ensure nobody is touching the person. Press the flashing ‘SHOCK’ button. (Note: A fully automatic device will deliver the shock itself after giving a warning).
Continue as instructed: The defibrillator will tell you when the shock is complete. Immediately follow its next instruction, which is usually to continue CPR. Keep going until emergency services arrive or the person shows signs of life.
